Icarus

This painting combines some of my favourite themes: the Fibonacci sequence and divine proportion, woven through the myth of Icarus as a meditation on personal choice and the paths we take through consciousness.

Icarus here faces three paths: to remain on the horizon line — the conscious level, where things are more or less as they seem. To fly high into the supra-consciousness, too close to the sun of truth where his wings will melt and his reality dissolve. Or to delve deep into the unending subconscious.

He is represented as a tiger moth — a species found locally in Brisbane. The reference is deliberate: a moth drawn to flame still has choice, but will most likely choose the exuberant, destructive path.
